Letters between Frederick Smith and Fred Bullock, Secretary of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons [RCVS]. The main subject of discussion is research carried out by Smith, with Bullock’s assistance, regarding manuscript and literary sources of veterinary history during the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This is presumably leading towards Smith’s publication of ‘Early History of Veterinary Literature’ in 1913. Particular topics of interest are: horse breeding and supply to the Royal family and Cavalry; laws and taxation relating to horses; the RCVS and its Library; Smith’s personal library; sources held at the Public Record Office on Chancery Lane.
