RCVS Archive

This collection contains selected images from the College’s own archive, primarily documents dating from the nineteenth century.

These include documents relating to the inception of the College (1840s), samples of applications for the Existing Practitioners list (1882-1883), plus papers concerning the case brought against the RCVS regarding Aleen Cust’s application to sit the Diploma Examination (1897-1898).

Edward Coleman Lectures

Edward Coleman (1766-1839) became head of the London Veterinary College in 1794. Between November 1821 and January 1822 he gave a series of lectures on the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the horse.

This collection consists of digitised images of notes from these lectures made by Edmund Gabriel, one of his students. Gabriel would later become the first Secretary of the RCVS, from 1844 to 1861.

Connie Ford Papers

Connie Ford (1912-1998) graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1933. She became an authority on cattle disease and fertility, and served as Veterinary Investigation Officer for the East Midlands between 1951 and 1972.

This collection comprises correspondence from the beginning of her career. These describe her experiences as an MRCVS working in the 1940s, including her early years in practice, her war work and her initial research into animal health.

Frederick Smith Papers

Frederick Smith (1857-1929) was an army veterinary officer (1879-1902) taking care of cavalry horses. Part of this collection concerns his experiences in India and in the Second Boer War.
