Edward Mayhew Watercolours

Edward Mayhew (d.1868) wrote several books on veterinary subjects. Two of his most celebrated works are The Illustrated Horse Doctor (1860) and Illustrated Horse Management (1864).

Our digital collection consists of many of his original watercolour artworks intended for use in these two publications.

Copies of both these books can be found in the historical library collection.

Anatomical Artworks Collection

This collection consists of watercolour paintings depicting various sections of limbs and organs, created for educational or illustrative purposes. Many concern disease or damage to horses.

A significant proportion are thought to have been donated by our former president William Field in 1877. Others date from between 1820 and 1848.
